BAMcinématek is screening twelve films with the help of Martin Scorcese’s World Cinema Foundation, established to preserve classic films from countries that don’t have the resources to do so. Two of these offerings are from Latin America – The Wave (Redes) (1936) from Mexico, and Brazil’s Limite (1931).
The Wave tells the story of a fisherman’s strike in Mexico, using a nonprofessional cast of local fishermen, beautiful photography from Paul Strand, direction by Fred Zinnemann and Emilio Gómez Muriel, it’s said to be a one-of-a-kind film.
Limite is the only film by Mario Peixoto, who made it at the tender age of 21. An avant garde masterpiece, it uses flashbacks to explore the lives of two women and a man who now find themselves adrift at sea.
Be sure to check out the full roster of films, as well.
