A small farming town in Catalonia is the setting for Xavi Marrades’ documentary, titled The Stranger’s Land. The film captures the filmmaker’s return to his hometown of Cervera after a 10-year absence. Catch a free screening at Anthology Film Archives on February 2nd.
As the filmmaker states, “as soon as I turned on my video camera, a universe lost in time came back to life.” As he shifts from being an insider to becoming an outsider/observer, “gradually, a memory that belongs to the individual and the community starts flowing” in front of the camera. The Stranger’s Land is a recollection of moments that portray a very particular region, with its people, its traditions and its landscapes.
