Silent film began to fade away beginning in the late 1920’s but it remained a viable medium in other nations well into the 1930’s. In Brazil, Mario Peixoto directed his first and only film, Limite in 1931.
The film shows two people stranded at sea. Their lives are shown on land in flashbacks. Acclaimed for it’s avant garde sensibilities, the film remains as one of the best silent films made, period. To this day, it is considered one of the best if not the best Brazilian films ever made. The film was well received by celebrities such as Orson Welles, Sergei Eisenstein and others. The film remains a critical success and has become a cult film. With that being said, see it at BAM this week.
