Last December, Colombian-American brothers Gabriel and Isaac Fortoul knocked on hip hop empresario Damon Dash ’s door and presented him with the idea for an exhibit. Dash had recently opened an art gallery space at his DD172 compound (which houses a magazine, TV network and music studio) but had yet to inaugurate it. The brothers, curator Gabriel and visual artists Isaac, had recently returned to New York after a few years in Phoenix, where they had organized countless art shows showcasing up-and-coming urban art. Dash didn’t need much convincing; he immediately dug the brothers’ style and agreed to have them curate and organize a show, in less than 2 months.
Two Phoenix-based Latino artists, Bobby Castaneda (pictured) and Hector Ruiz, plus Isaac, are featured in this DD 172’s inaugural show, which Gabriel says really has no “title” because it was put together in such a short time, but we can refer to it at Fortoul Presents. The artists work on wood panels and murals, as well as in sculpture. DJ Sucio Smash spun at the Opening Party, we’re hoping they do another cool party for the closing.
